Reverse Engineering

Reverse engineering is studying a compiled app to understand how its code and protocols work. It includes inspecting a downloaded binary and observing the app during execution. Security researchers use these techniques legitimately; attackers can use the same methods to find and bypass defenses.

For a fraud operation, the useful result is often a repeatable way to imitate a trusted request or alter a check. Client-side logic becomes especially risky when the backend accepts its outcome without independent validation.

Examples

  • An operator examines onboarding code to understand which client values determine whether a KYC step proceeds.
  • A debugger is attached to inspect execution and locate checks that can be patched or bypassed.
  • An attacker disables certificate pinning to inspect app traffic and reproduce requests outside the intended flow.

How Cipherstep helps

Cipherstep protects its collection and sealing logic with obfuscation and layered anti-analysis techniques. RASP detects supported debugger, hooking, and instrumentation activity and can interrupt the running app when those checks trigger. Customer-specific SDK releases evolve these defenses so an attacker’s work on one release does not simply transfer to every later release.

Fresh attestation gives your backend evidence about the environment producing a protected request. The Decision API can surface supported live manipulation, replay, or collection-integrity failures before your backend authorizes the action. Developer Portal release controls and audit records support a consistent SDK update process.

Offline inspection of a downloaded binary does not create a session Cipherstep can observe. Anti-analysis increases the effort required to study and manipulate the client; server-side validation remains necessary for identity, permissions, and transactions.
